Schiermonnikoog opts for flora and fauna-friendly street lighting

4 November 2025

The municipality of Schiermonnikoog has taken an important step in protecting its unique nocturnal landscape and fragile nature.

Within the framework of the Wadden Sea Darkness Policy, sustainable, nature-friendly lighting by Innolumis was chosen in the light colour 2200 Kelvin with minimal impact on flora and fauna. Another special feature is that the luminaires are dimmed far back in the dark hours to preserve the natural darkness on the island as much as possible.

Schiermonnikoog chose 2 types from the Innolumis product range, namely the Nicole and the Mini Victoria. For the Schiermonnikoog core, the Nicole was chosen in a 10-watt version that is dimmed sharply in the dark hours, ranging from 50% to 90% depending on the location within the core. The Mini Victoria luminaires were installed in the outdoor area equipped with detection modules where the light temporarily turns brighter if motion is detected. Without detection, the luminaires burn at 10% of normal output by default.

After being assembled in 2 social workshops in the Netherlands (in Groningen and in Amersfoort), these luminaires were expertly assembled by CityTec just before the start of the tourist season.

This unique project involved close cooperation between Montad (advice), CityTec (installation), Innolumis and, last but not least, the municipality of Schiermonnikoog. We therefore thank Marnix Lieffijn, Pieter Jan van der Molen and Gerard Buining for their trust in the company and the product.
